Borrowers film essay

Isabella: Borrowers Film Essay

In the film The Borrowers (1997) director Peter Hewitt uses many different shots such as cross cutting, high angles and scanning (etc).
He used lots of cross cutting to show fear in not just the characters, but to give fear to the audience as well.

In an early scene of the film, it has a bird’s eye view shot of Peagreen and Arrietty on the road under the moving truck. This shows fear in the cross cutting between the parents and the children.

It also uses a high angle shot of Mr Ocious P. Potter. This was added in so the audience would feel like Peagreen and Arrietty watching over him. This technique might of been added in to build tension.

In one of very first scenes in the film, the camera scans the wicked face of Mr Ocious P. Potter smirking. This suggests he is someone you wouldn’t trust or believe.

Hewitt uses high angles and low angles to show the way Borrowers way of seeing things. This kind of shot will make the audience feel like the characters.

Country Road

                                Country Road

The rumbling sound of cars rushing by makes your heart beat faster.
Great pine trees stand at Ben Nevis' feet.
Stones devour the hills of a million years.
The trickling sound of waterfalls echos through the ragged caves.
Soft clouds hug the mountain tops.
The sun starts to set behind bare cliffs.
Light had been stolen, eaten by the hills.
Night time.

Today's trip!

                              Today's Trip

Today my brother, Mum and I went to the National Museum of rural life in Scotland.  It was all about old farm life and farm animals.  The first part of the museum was all about tractors and ploughs.  It varied from the first tractors ever made and the latest ones built.  Then, we rode a tractor down to the farm.  At the farm, there were many animals, pigs, sheep, hens, horses and cows.  There was also a Georgian farm house that has the furniture since the 1950s.  It was originally built in 1780.  It own 100 acres of the farm.  On the way back through the museum, we were garden detectives.  We looked at foot prints and guessed what they belonged to.  We also looked at stuffed animals. That was cool.

Trip

                            The   Trip

I've just arrived in Scotland after a 32 hour flight. We first stopped in Hong Kong.  I really liked Hong Kong because of its food, clothing and music.  At the airport, there was an official Disneyland shop and really cool restaurant.  We also stopped over in Qatar.  I liked it because of the HUGE play ground! I bought a camel there too!  Mum and I got lost on the journey back from the airport for an hour then Dad found us!  Phew!

My Learning Conference {term 3}

Learning Conference

On the 4th of August term 3, I had shared my second learning conference this year.  I am very proud of sharing my learning with my Mum.

Maths

I am working at the beginning and middle of stage 6.
My goal is to be at the middle of stage 6 by the end of the year.
To get there I need to work on instantly recalling my basic facts within 4 seconds.
In maths we have been learning about fractions.

Reading

I am reading at 11 years.
My goal is to be at 11.5 years.
To achieve this I need to 'infer' or read between the lines to understand what the author is telling me.
In reading we have been learning to 'skim and scan' to quickly find key information instead of reading the whole page.

Writing

I am working at level 3B.
My goal is to be at 3P by the end of the year.
To achieve this I need to 'add, change and delete' to edit my writing.
In writing we have been learning to vary our sentence structure. We have also been learning to write explanations.

 Inquiry

In inquiry we have been learning about visual arts and famous artists.

snowflake

                                            Snowflake

Amongst the clouds, the snowflake drifts.  Meandering along, it weaves its way along the bustling streets.  Below the clouds, it grows every second, and realises its unique beauty.  Sinking to the ground, the snowflake twirls gradually to the ragged pavement.  With no sound, landing on a bench, it melts leaving only water.  Another one will take its place.

My science adventure

                       My  Science  Adventure  2016

This year for science, we focused on 'planet earth and beyond'.  My question was " why and how was the solar system created ".  The answer to my question is that 4.5 billion years ago a hydrogen cloud formed from space gases and rocks.  The middle was like a magnet, and sucked in the gases and rocks.  Then 3 million years later, it burst into spheres made of the gases and rock it sucked in, the spheres were also many sizes.  Then the magnet from the middle of the cloud, became the sun we see today.  We had 9 weeks to complete a video of our question with Mr Gemmell, a 3D model with Mrs Strathern and gymnastics with Mrs Hobbs.  Hope you like my video I made with Mr Gemmell!

                                                         Hope you like my video!

Tough-kid Challange

                                  Tough-Kid   Challenge

                                               2016

This year,  Mr. Matthews held the first Tough-kid Challenge!  It included, water slides, the mud-run, and lots of other fun things like that.  My favourite part was the mud run because it felt different than the normal things I do.

Masterchef

                                           Master Chef

This year,  our class did a master chef competition for the healthy eating focus.  First we started with sandwiches as a practise round in groups of four.

Then we made groups of six.  The group I was in included, Max,  Finn, Braxstyn, Helena, Mackenzie and me.  We made pulled pork wrap, and made it to sell them at the tough kid challange for the lunch order.

awaking flowers

                                 Awaking flowers

Thirsty leaves whimper quietly as they wait for rain to come.  Shiny steel pots groan as they’re pushed along the porch.  Delicate petals awake from their peaceful slumber as the sun peers out from behind the frosty mountains. Flower, Flowers, Natural

Sweet pea vines collide silently as they fight for their own space.  Tulips yawn slowly as the sun gradually rises.  Bluebells do a morning twitch and stretch.

koru art

                                              Koru  Art

For the first piece of art this year, we did koru art to show important people in our lives. We could use the koru, {new beginnings} pitau {love} or manapare {strength} I did red, orange and dark yellow for the inside of it and purple, sky blue and dark blue for the outside. Mrs Strathern showed us a smudging technique to make the picture pop out. I am very proud of it.

choral reading

                                      Anzac   Choral  Reading

                                                    Poem

Flanders Fields Poem

Yesterday, some of us did a poem to do with Anzac day coming up in the holidays. We did actions to go with the words. I have attached a video of me doing it.

'Black' poem

                                                Black

Black is nightmares filling a horrified child's thoughts through out the windy night.

It is hairy monsters rising from under the dark, messy depths of your bed.

Black is night time with a putrid surprise of creepy crawlers darting up someone's jittery legs.

It is horrid thoughts of what a dreadful day it had been.

Aunty similes

Similes response to ' James and the giant peach '

                     by Roald Dahl

                 1.   Aunt Spiker is as long as an ancient warrior's sword.

                 2. Aunt Sponger looks as rotten as a putrid rusty rubbish dump.

                 3. Their words meanly pierce into James's like a dagger hitting him suddenly.

The museum ( Da Vinci )

                                             The museum trip

A few weeks ago, rooms 8, 9 and 10 went to the Hamilton museum to see Leonardo Da Vinci' s machines and inventions. Firstly, we saw things about the first world war and lots of information about it ( I liked that part ) we also went in an exhibit called 'magic mirrors' that was cool because if you turned a handle on one mirror, it made you big or little. Then, we got to see da Vinci's machines, sketches and plans. My favourite machine was the robotic lion that spits out lily flowers and roared. That was the most exciting museum trip ever!

The school fair

                                  THE SCHOOL FAIR

On the fourth of March it was the school fair. Room 9's stall was the sweet treat stall, it was very
popular because we sold candy floss, toffee apples, fudge and cupcakes. My favourite part was the
nose picking booth because the slime felt weird and I liked getting the lollies. I also enjoyed eating
candy floss, fudge and coconut ice. The other part I loved was the petting zoo because all the
animals        were so cute! I can't wait until the next school fair.

Senior Swimming Sports

                                                    SENIOR SWIMMING SPORTS

On the twenty seventh of February it was senior swimming sports. I really enjoyed it this time! At first, the water was like ice. I did back stroke, breath stroke and freestyle. The best part was when I came third place in nine year old girls freestyle. ( not the finals ) I also liked the P.T.A lunch because I thought the food was amazing. I also can't wait until next year, and it has been the best part of the year so far!

All about ME

Hi. I'm Isabella and I am nine years old. I think 2016 will be an amazing year!

I enjoy horseback riding, kung fu and cheer leading.  My favourite school subject is English because I love spelling (I am very passionate about it), and science because I am fascinated about geology, biology and experiments like exploding coke, floating eggs and volcanic eruptions (mini ones, not real ones of course!)

Something you might not know about me is I come from another country, Denmark, and I can speak Danish.
